Huaxintong to start shipping China-customized server chips in 2018

Guizhou Huaxintong Semiconductor Technology Co, a joint venture between Qualcomm Inc and the Guizhou provincial government, plans to start shipping China-customized server chips in 2018, a senior company executive said. Earlier this year, Qualcomm and the Guizhou government poured another $144 million into the company, bringing the total investment to 2.85 billion yuan. "We are scrambling to absorb all the licensed technologies from Qualcomm. TSMC to start trial of 5nm chips in 2019

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co announced plans to start trial production of 5 nm chips in the second quarter of 2019, as the world’s largest contract chipmaker sought to reassure clients of its role as a trusted technology and capacity partner. The remarks by TSMC came after rival Samsung Electronics Co on Wednesday announced plans to spin off its foundry business to avoid conflicts of interest with customers. “Our mission is to create technology and to provide capacity in catering to your needs. Samsung Electronics to set up fund to help suppliers amid Moon's reform push

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said it would set up a $445 million fund to help small suppliers, the highest-profile South Korean firm to unveil steps in the wake of new President Moon Jae-in's call to protect small businesses. Moon came to power this month promising to rein in the family-owned conglomerates that dominate Asia's fourth-largest economy. Android co-founder Andy Rubin will likely debut his new Essential smartphone May 30th

Andy Rubin is preparing to formally unveil the smartphone his new company, Essential, has been working on. Essential tweeted that “something big is coming” on May 30th, with Rubin himself adding that he and the team are “almost ready to share with you what we've been up to.” Rubin is scheduled to speak at Recode’s Code Conference on that date. Shipments of 18:9 smartphone panels to surge in 2H17

In view of fast growing demand for 18:9 all-screen displays from smartphone vendors, panel makers will expand production of such panels in the second half of 2017, according to industry sources. LG's G6 and Samsung's Galaxy S8 and S8+ launched in first-half 2017 are all-screen smartphones equipped with 18:9 display panels,rather than 16:9 units.
