Infineon and UMC announce manufacturing agreement for automotive applications
The semiconductor manufacturer Infineon Technologies AG and United Microelectronics Corporation announced the extension of their manufacturing partnership into power semiconductors for automotive applications. Prior to this expanded partnership, the foundry had been producing Infineon’s logic chips for more than 15 years.

Qihoo 360 announces strategic partnership with Coolpad
Qihoo 360 Technology Co. Ltd. announced it has formed a strategic partnership with Coolpad Group Limited through investing $409.05 million in cash to take a 45% stake in a joint venture with Coolpad. The JV will primarily focus on mobile terminal products that are distributed through Internet as the primary channel, through building a strong mobile ecosystem involving designing, manufacturing, marketing and selling best in class smartphones and other mobile Internet devices with innovative user experiences in China.

TAG Heuer enlists partners in smartwatch plan and may make acquisitions
TAG Heuer is pushing ahead with plans for a smartwatch to more directly compete with the likes of the Apple Watch and may make acquisitions to help drive the strategy, its head said on Tuesday. Swiss watch makers like TAG Heuer had until recently largely dismissed the threat of "smart" gadgets, but LVMH watch chief Jean-Claude Biver says he had changed his mind on the subject.

Jury finds Apple not guilty of antitrust in iPod suit
A jury unanimously cleared Apple of antitrust violations for iPod restrictions, capping a decade-long case and a week-long trial that had no shortage of drama and confusion. The plaintiffs represented a group of digital music consumers who purchased iPods from 2006 to 2009 and alleged that Apple unfairly locked users into iTunes software on iPods, and in turn, locked out competitors.

IC foundries gearing up for 8-inch fab expansions
China-based IC foundry Semiconductor Manufacturing International is looking to expand production capacity at its 8-inch wafer fab in Shenzhen, while Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and United Microelectronics both plan to build additional capacity at their 8-inch fabs in China, according to company sources. The Internet of Things is being regarded as the next semiconductor growth opportunity.

Synopsys and imec expand TCAD collaboration to 5nm and beyond
Synopsys, Inc. announced the expansion of its collaboration with imec to nanowire and other devices targeting the 5-nanometer technology node and beyond. The agreement enables Synopsys to deliver accurate, process-calibrated models for its Sentaurus TCAD tools to semiconductor manufacturers for use during 5nm technology node research and development.
